Freelance Op at USU

We weren't able to do a project at work, and so they asked me for references. Preferrably, they'd like to work w/someone local (or someone who is willing to come up for a couple face-to-face interviews). Here's the email I got from them today. Basically, the project is a direct mailer for the School of Accounting @ USU that will go to high school seniors and current USU freshmen to show them the perks of majoring in accounting.

If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll send Melissa your info and get you in contact w/her. Could you let me know ASAP.

Thanks team. Hope everyone's doin' well. Weird to think I haven't seen you guys for 8 months after seein' you nearly everyday for 3 years.

--Kara

Here's the specs:

I guess we would want to know what/how each person
charges, and make sure it would be someone who could come in and meet with
us a couple of times during the project. From past experience, I know
it is nice to be able to sit down and show someone what we are looking
for, instead of just everything via email...so we would like to work
with someone who is local. We have, in the past, worked with an awesome
graphic designer who moved to SLC, and that is why we decided not to go
with him this time.

We are looking at a mailer to be sent out in January or February,
targeting seniors in high school and college freshmen, to advertise
Accounting as a major. We also were thinking of doing a mailer we could send
out to students interested in a Master of Accounting degree, advertising
our program. We don't really have a strict deadline for either
project, but would like to get them done as soon as we can--hopefully the end
of January-ish at least for the Accounting major project. I envision
both to be an 8 1/2 x 11 folded in half and sealed, with the postage
right on one side. I have a basic idea of what we want; we just need
someone to create it and make it a little bit better, to add to it if
possible although I will have the bodycopy and everything set to go when we
begin. We have some graphics we've found online, as I showed you at
the meeting with Advent, if you think any of those would work well...if
you hate them I would want to know, too, though. :) I will have the
text worked out; there will most likely be minor changes along the way. I
know Christmas is upcoming, so we realize the need to be flexible, but
we could start on this project as early as the beginning of next week.
We are not in the office Dec. 21-January 3...so we just need the
design. We can find someone to print and mail it out.

Thanks!

Freelance Opportunity

If anyone out there wants a quick & painless freelance job, let me know. It needs to be done within the next couple of weeks. Here's the deal: A wall tent manufacturer needs someone to design some labels to go on some tent packaging. Sounds like it'd pretty much require designing a template, then plugging copy and photos from there for the different models. I'd basically just introduce you and you could negotiate payment and file handling from there. First one to email me gets it (layne.turner {at] gmail.com).

Also, just to keep any of those who care informed, I'm moving tomorrow to Idaho Falls, aka God's Country. Logan has treated me well, but it's time to move on. I've gotten some good job experience and met some cool people, like yourselves. If you're ever on your way thru the I.F. there's a couch and some hot pockets with your name on 'em. Enjoi.

You have to love Wal-Mart!

"We had a 'going away' party yesterday for a lady at our Little Rock claim office. One of the supervisors called a Wal-Mart and ordered the cake. He told them to write:
'best wishes Suzanne' and underneath that 'we will miss you'. here's the cake that was delivered."

I think Wal-Mart "takes the cake" on this one (pun intended haha).

Krumpers Wanted

FYI, Spencer and I have decided to start a Krumping Troupe. For those that aren't in-the-know, wiki that shiz and get your Krump on. Tryouts to be announced.

Ug...

Does anyone know some code (either XML or ActionScript) that will size pictures as you load them into a container? I'm just wondering if there's an easier way to do this than going into Photoshop and sizing 'em and stuff. We're doing a wedding site for one of our co-workers and we're trying to figure out the fastest, most efficient way to build a gallery.

Thx team :)

Ha Ha

Well, y'all know how good I was (cough) at web stuff in school. I've been doin' tons at my new job, so it's been good to wet my palette (or something like that). We've posted the sites on the back-end of our site, so you should check 'em out.

http://www.adventcreative.com/hao

http://www.adventcreative.com/ignite

We should have UFO's site up by tmw (cross your fingers...it's been a nightmare of a project), so I'll send the link when that's done.

Glad to hear everyone's so successful right now.
Anyone up for a group dinner over Christmas?

In the house

I finally got moved into my new house. It's been a long 6 months living in a bedroom, but it has paid off! Kristina and I are pretty lonely though, so if you find yourself in south jordan, give us a call and we'll cook you dinner.

Layne is in the house

Greetings all. Layne here. I'm a fellow USU-educated designer. I went to Switzerland with Nate and Spence and took a class or two from the illustrious Mr. Smellie. I hope I'm not too late to the party, but I wanted to pop in and hollar at the peeps. I know that being a print-guy alienates me a bit, as most of you seem to be more interactive-types. But, I'm hoping we can learn to get our blog-on in harmony.

Anyway, back to what prompted this post. I know of an opening in Logan for a designer. It's for packaging, pop, some front-end web support, print ads and photography (nothing too elaborate, mostly product photos). Due to the lack of designers in the valley, it pays well also. Either leave a comment, or email me: layne.turner {at}gmail.com with any leads. Thanks.

p.s. Is it just me or is there a major designer shortage around here? Is it that way in Salt Lake too?

I Need A Programer

Hey Guys,

We are working on a redesign of our website and I need a programer that can help us build it. Know any programers looking for a couple thousand dollars?

ff0000

Maybe this won't appeal that much to you graduates, but Red Interactive is coming up to Logan tomorrow Nov 15, for the seminar class. Even if you're already rolling with some other professional firm, come scope out the competition then. They've made some pretty amazing stuff.

anyone going tonight

I'm venturing back up to the polar ice cap (logan) tonight. Is anyone else going to the Karim Rashid deally-o?

freelance opportunity

Hey guys, I have gotten way busy all of the sudden, and can't keep up with my freelance work. Im in the process of making 25-45 second flash slideshows, and could use a hand. Overall they are pretty lo-fi, just basic tweens, fades, etc.

Pay is 80 bucks per video, so if youre fast, you can make good money. Most of them take me 3-4 hours, most of which consists of me trying to figure out stupid stuff that i cant remember. If you're faster than me, which you probably are, you can make pretty good money off them. The concepts and copy are already written, and you get paid back for any stock photos that you might need (i just use istockphoto). They must be done in AS2, and you can't use fuse/zigo, because i have to bring them back into flash 8 and export them as quicktime. I'm pretty sure you can use tween class though.

Let me know if there are any takers, the deadline on these is the next couple weeks, but i can submit them one at a time.

PS- Kristina and I just found out we're having twins!

The Golden Compass

Well, nobody has posted any work yet, so I guess I'll get it started haha.

So my work has a christmas party every year where they rent out a theater and invite all our clients to go with us to see a movie. Every year we make a dope online invitation/RSVP for it and send it to the clients. So anyway, this year we're going to see The Golden Compass and they put me in charge of this project and I'm pretty stoked on how it turned out...so stoked I thought I would share even. Unfortunately you're not all really invited to the movie haha. Click on the image below to check it out:

No Affiliation ROCKS!

So this weekend (during the snowstorm) I went skateboarding at this guy's skateshop/house in Syracuse. He has a micro ramp in his living room, and a fully stocked skateshop in there too. It was a blast, allthough I wanted to offer to re-design his logo, haha.

Chris Farley Lives!

Don't worry Dave, I don't trust that thing anyway. It couldn't even recognize that this little girl looks exactly like Chris Farley...

It's obvious that this thing favors the female sex. I do hope this little girl is as funny as Chris when she grows up, though

Celebrity look alike

So I saw on some random blog that you can go to myheritage.com to see what celebrity you look like. Naturally, I was pretty excited to see who they would match me up with. I scrounged up a decent photo of myself, uploaded it, waited patiently, and this is what they came up with...

drum roll please.......

Claude Lelouch!

I guess I look older than I thought. To be fair, they also said I look like Kevin Costner. Still old but at least better lookin...

Hey y'all

So, I was just a-wonderin' how everyone was doin' and thought I'd give a little update on my life. Trev and I are still livin' it up in Logan; Trev graduates in May and I'm workin' at a sweet studio called Advent Creative, 4 blocks away from our apt. It's awesome learnin' more and more each day and trying to figure out AS 3 w/my co-workers. But the big announcement...WE'RE EXPECTING!!!!....j/k, and that won't happen for a while.

Speakin' of babies, does anyone know where the pics of Dave's baby is?

Hope all's well w/everyone, and just for the record, I'd pry sell my soul w/Cam to work at Alphabet Arm Design too :)

Thanks for the invite

Hey everyone, this IS a terriffic idea. Thanks for inviting a lowely designer such as myself to partake in your brilliance. This will be a great way to keep myself creatively motivated. Thanks.

Great Idea Nate!

Hey, Just sayin' I think this is a great Idea! Got to get back to work!

The Irony

nice man, I actually just set up a blog over my lunch break but you beat me to the punch, haha. Lets just use this one though.

How much can you blog?

What's up class of 2007...ish.

This blog is for all the design students who just graduated from USU (or is graduating soon, or graduated a long time ago, or will graduate in a long time)... pretty much if you want to contribute or know somebody who wants to contribute, e-mail me (nate@natesdesign.com) or spence (allred.spencer@gmail.com) and we'll send ya the invite.

We made this blog because we wanted to be cool like the people who made this blog. Hey it was a good idea so we stole it (isn't that what we do as graphic designers?) So let's hear what everyone is up to these days. Feel free to post work that you are proud of. Go ahead and post comical stuff that you find on "you tube" or anywhere else while you're surfing the world wide web (while you should be working). Oh, and don't forget to brag a lot too.

Well, I really hope we get a lot of people to contribute to this. It will be great to see how everyone is doing.
